Make Me Laugh😂

A boy came home carrying a school fundraiser catalog.

His father sighed.

“What are you selling this time?”

“Cookies.”

Dad looked through the catalog.

“These are expensive.”

The boy nodded.

“That's why I brought it home to you instead of the neighbors.”

🏠 Prince William Approves $200,000 for Foundation and Soil Repairs

Some Prince William property owners are getting financial help with expensive foundation and soil problems.

The Board of County Supervisors approved $200,000 in funding for seven eligible projects Tuesday through the county's new Foundation and Soil Management Program.

The approved projects include properties in Woodbridge, Haymarket and Manassas.

Five projects involve residential properties, while two of the largest awards involve homeowners association property.

The total eligible project costs reached approximately $356,831, meaning available funding wasn't sufficient to cover every project's full cost.

Under the program, eligible single-family homeowners can receive up to $25,000, while qualifying homeowners associations may receive larger awards.

Why it matters: Foundation damage, soil movement and erosion can create expensive problems for homeowners. This new program offers assistance with repairs that might otherwise be financially overwhelming. Potomac Local→

🚴 Volunteers Improve Popular Mountain Biking Trail at Locust Shade Park

A little volunteer effort is making a big difference at one of eastern Prince William's outdoor destinations.

Mountain bikers visiting Locust Shade Park now have an improved bicycle repair station at the park's main trailhead.

Volunteers from the Mid-Atlantic Off-Road Enthusiasts refurbished the existing repair stand and installed a new concrete pad.

The station provides access to basic tools and an air pump, allowing riders to address minor mechanical problems without cutting their outings short.

The project was funded entirely through volunteer donations.

County Parks & Recreation published the improvement story Wednesday.

Why it matters: Locust Shade Park is a popular recreational destination for Prince William families, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts. Improvements like this help make local trails more convenient and accessible. More→

♻️ Dumfries Receives Recycling and Litter-Prevention Grant

The Town of Dumfries has announced another investment in keeping its community clean.

According to an October 1 town notice, Dumfries received a Litter Prevention and Recycling Grant for the sixth consecutive year.

The announcement continues the town's ongoing efforts to address litter, promote recycling and support environmental stewardship.

The town has not provided enough accessible details in the notice to independently confirm the grant amount or specific new projects, so we're leaving those details out.

Why it matters: Litter prevention and recycling programs help protect neighborhoods, public spaces and local waterways. More→

📊 New Virginia School Ratings: How Did Prince William Schools Perform?

A newly released school-performance report offers an updated look at how Prince William County schools are doing.

Prince William County Public Schools announced Wednesday that all PWCS schools remain fully accredited under Virginia's Standards of Accreditation.

Additionally, nearly two-thirds of PWCS schools earned ratings of either Meets Expectations or Distinguished under Virginia's School Performance and Support Framework. The framework evaluates several factors, including academic achievement, student growth, graduation outcomes and readiness for life after high school.

PWCS emphasizes that accreditation, state performance ratings and federal accountability designations are separate measures.

That means a school can be fully accredited while still receiving a designation identifying specific areas where additional support is needed.

Why it matters: Parents now have additional information for understanding school performance beyond a single test score or rating. More→

🧠 PWCS Highlights ADHD Awareness Month

PWCS also released new guidance Tuesday for families and educators during ADHD Awareness Month.

The school division is encouraging adults to focus on the individual student rather than treating ADHD as a single set of behaviors.

PWCS notes that eligible students with disabilities may receive individualized accommodations through Section 504 or special-education services, and families can begin the referral process through their school's administration. More —>

🌊 New Testing Finds Potomac River Has Recovered From Massive Sewage Spill

Here's an important regional environmental update.

DC Water announced Wednesday that expanded testing found no evidence of lasting damage to the Potomac River from January's major sewage spill.

The incident occurred after a section of the Potomac Interceptor sewer line collapsed, releasing more than 240 million gallons of untreated wastewater.

The spill prompted significant concerns about bacteria and river-water safety.

According to DC Water, follow-up testing examined bacteria, oxygen levels, nutrients and metals. The utility collected additional samples at six Maryland locations upstream and downstream of the original overflow area. Those results fell within normal ranges for the river.

Why It Matters Here: The Potomac River is an important natural resource for Prince William County, including communities around Woodbridge, Leesylvania and Quantico.

The findings are encouraging for the wider river system. However, the testing announcement does not establish that every location along the Potomac is suitable for swimming or other recreational activities. Residents should continue following any location-specific water-quality advisories. More→

Your I-95 Toll Dollars May Fund Local Commutes, and the Competition Is Heating Up

Northern Virginia transportation officials expect $45-50 million to be available for local projects along the I-395/95 corridor in the FY 28-29 funding cycle. The money comes from toll revenue on the 95 and 395 Express Lanes. Prince William County, Dumfries, Manassas and Manassas Park are all eligible, and officials are bracing for "significant demand." Past rounds have helped fund OmniRide's enhanced bus trips from Dale City to the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor, so the decisions ahead could affect local commuters.

Tropical Storm Isaias Could Bring a Rainy Weekend to Northern Virginia

Forecasters expect tropical moisture to spread north, with showers possible Saturday night and rain becoming more widespread Sunday.

Sunday night currently looks wettest, and showers could linger into Monday. The National Weather Service says Isaias’s track and speed remain uncertain, so rainfall totals could change. For now, rain—not damaging wind—is the main concern locally, while more serious inland effects are possible farther south in the Carolinas. Patch→

Couples Who Exercise Together Report Stronger Marriages

A walk together might do more than get couples moving. In a BYU study of nearly 1,700 young married couples across the United States, spouses who exercised together reported better communication, more effective conflict resolution and less marital stress than those who did not share physical activity.

Researchers Jeremy Yorgason and Ashlyn Hiatt Mildenhall found that exercising separately was also associated with healthier marriages, but shared activity showed stronger links. Walking was the most common way couples exercised together, offering a simple chance to talk and listen. The findings do not make exercise a cure for relationship problems, but suggest that regular time spent moving together may help couples connect.

💵 Why Some Medicare Part B Enrollees Are Getting a $90 Rebate

An unexpected $90 Medicare deposit has some people checking their accounts—and others wondering why they didn’t get one. The federal government announced a one-time Part B premium rebate on Oct. 2, funded by the Medicare Improvement Fund.

About 20.8 million people are eligible for the payment this month, while roughly 40 million other Part B enrollees are not. The difference comes down to the type of coverage a person has, so being enrolled in Part B alone doesn’t mean a rebate is on the way.
